A quote has been really resonating with me these past few weeks…
“Your first step needs to be taken from where you are, not where you want to be”
This was derived from Lisbeth Darsh – her website is a good one to check into every so often if you have a few minutes and need to find a few profound snippets of thoughtfulness to get through your day.
The reason this piece she wrote has really struck a chord because isn’t this line and this concept a core guideline for how we need to set expectations with ourselves? You’re not going to be able to run a marathon without taking the first steps in your training program, and your training program isn’t going to work unless you commit to it.
There are no shortcuts in fitness and life, and we need to be comfortable with where we are at any given moment. In fitness, you are exactly where your body wants to be, you can’t advance without taking the first step from where you ARE, you can’t take the step from where you WANT to be – you’ll only disappoint yourself. Sometimes, we need to take many steps to get there, but we need to be patient with the process.
Stay focused. Believe.
So this week, take a moment to look at where you want to be, figure out where you are, and take that first step.
