As the Pier-to-Peak running group is only weeks away from seeing all their hard work pay off, it will soon be time to celebrate their achievements, look ahead to future races, and set new goals. For those of you who weren’t quite feeling the uphill grind of Pier-to-Peak, there are plenty of opportunities this fall to try out your running legs and we are excited to announce a new program to help get you started. The Beginner’s Running Program will have something for everyone: people just getting into running, people who run already but want to learn about different training techniques, and anyone interested in running the Santa Barbara International Marathon relay race or one of the many other races in the fall and winter.
So, if you’re a total newbie, if you’re already comfortable with a few miles and want to challenge yourself further, or if you simply want to review and refine your fundamentals, join us from Sept. 8–Nov. 5. We’ll meet as a group twice a week to train and cover the following topics:
• SHOES: From minimalist, “barefoot” styles to cushy, cradling kicks, find out which shoes work best for you, your feet, and your goals. We will be hosting a SPECIAL shoe shopping day with our friends at Santa Barbara Running to help you find the right shoes for your fabulous feet!
• NUTRITION: What should runners eat? If you do other sports or weight training, how can you supplement your diet to optimize your endurance?
• HYDRATION: We’ll discuss when to drink, what to drink, and how to best keep your body going before, during, and after your runs.
• EXERCISES and MOBILITY: A lot of the work is done off the road, so we’ll cover what you can do to keep your body in prime condition to hit the pavement and avoid injury.
• INCREASE MILEAGE and SPEED: Learn about different training techniques, pacing, intervals, and more to get you moving faster and keep you on the road longer.
• IMPROVE RUNNING FORM: Get expert evaluation of your form and tips to make it more efficient.
• And, of course, running FASHION: It’s always more fun when you’re looking fine and feeling fierce!
